Flexible magnets are much cheaper than other types of magnetic material; they offer a unique combination of properties (Flexibility and Magnetism) at a much lower cost than you would find other magnetic material. Flexible ones permit design innovations due to the mach inability and flexibility of the product. They also permit manufacturing techniques that are quite simply not possible with brittle or ridged materials.

These magnets can be Punched, Bent, Coiled, Twisted and otherwise machined in to pretty much any shape imaginable without losing any of their magnetic energy. The only downside to these is that the magnetic properties are not as strong as other magnetic materials, however in some instances this is a preferable characteristic.

Methods of Manufacturing Flexible Magnets

Calendering is a method of producing materials in sheet form; it is capable of producing sheets up to roughly 24″ wide. (This method involves squeezing a compound between a set of rollers, this compresses the compound and flattens it in to a sheet. To reach the desired thickness the sheet is placed between the rollers a number of times until the correct thickness has been achieved).

Extrusion is a method used for producing materials in strip form; it is capable of producing strips between ΒΌ” to 10″ wide. (This method involves squeezing a compound that has been heated through a die that has been pre-shaped. As the material exists the die it is cooled and then magnetised, there are different grades available with the standard grade only having 1 side magnetised).
