Surface grinders are machine tools used to provide precision regarding the level, size, or finish of the surfaces. The longitudinal feed is usually powered by hydraulics or cross feed, and any mixture of hand, electrical, or hydraulic operation styles may be used depending on the ultimate usage of the machine.
The operation, once started, does not require supervision. But before starting the operation, the precision level has to be decided. This precision level differs for each operation and the operations may have to be done repeatedly to obtain the required precision. This process is called spark out. When the precision level is achieved without any inconsistency, the actual grinding process starts immediately.
The grinding wheels must be in good condition and the condition of the wheels is maintained using diamond dressers. These diamond dressers may be fitted to the wheel head or they may be placed on the tabletop. The cooling process is very important for these machines, so it starts right after the grinding process. Sometimes the cooling process starts as and when the grinding process is going on.
The surface grinder comes with lots of facilities. Precision surface grinders have absolutely vibration-free and noise-free operations. Some grinders have provisions for coolant applicants. In certain grinders, there are provisions for gathering the dust particles that are generated during the precision process. Different kinds of bonding systems are used in surface grinders. They may be metal bonds, resin bonds, vitrified bonds, polybands, or resin bonds. Each has its own distinctive features and advantages. A surface grinder can be operated in a manual or fully programmed mode. The PC-based control system is a recent innovation that allows someone experienced with non-CNC surface grinding to make the transition to CNC very easily. The graphical user interface with a touchscreen panel is shown in the inset. The price range of surface grinders varies from $1500 to over $3500.
